Taking a Step Back From Birth Stories

Taking a Step Back From Birth Stories

Taking a step back from birth stories wasn’t an easy decision to make. Birth stories have had my heart from the get go, long before I even became a photographer. Letting them go took me many, many, months to accept and come to terms with.

Covid was the main factor in that.

Being that majority of my moms were hospital patients, it was almost instantaneous that these sessions were ripped out from under us. Stacked on top with some family stuff that limited my availability for babysitters I just knew it was the only decision that made sense.

But it’s one of those bitter sweet feelings also. My kids are getting older, the sports and extracurricular activities are becoming more and more, and of course they want me there to watch them. I don’t blame them one bit.

After the first lockdown, my business skyrocketed. I went from a few sessions a week, to 1-3 sessions every day. It’s almost impossible to reschedule that many sessions when getting called into a birth. One, being that I can’t for certain reschedule until the last minute, and two, being that I have no other availability to push the sessions to.

I tossed around the idea of maybe hiring an on-call nanny, or only accepting one birth a month. But there’s just too many moving factors, it’s either all in or not at all. So for the time being, it’s not at all for me.

I’m confident in the future that’ll change. But for now I need to be where my babies need me, because these are moments I’ll never get back. And when I originally started my business it was so that I could make my own schedule and be there for my kids. I wanted to be there to wake them up and get them off to school, be able to attend every school function with them, and be there when they got home from school. Then add it homework, and sports. But eventually that will all be a distant memory.
